When Every Hatchling Counts: How Data Is Helping Save Malaysia's Sea Turtles

A hatchling’s first journey is only a few dozen meters, from nest to shoreline, but almost none of them make it. Of every 1,000 eggs laid, only about one turtle survives to adulthood. So, when a conservation team is trying to protect that fragile chance at survival, every piece of information matters: which beaches are being used, how many nests were laid, how many hatchlings made it to the water, which threats are recurring and where.

For years, the Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia was gathering all of that critical information the hard way, by hand.

The Notebook Problem

Picture a fieldworker at dawn, walking a beach after a nesting night, recording counts in a notebook because that’s the tool that survives sand and saltwater. Later, someone transcribes it into a spreadsheet. Maybe a different spreadsheet than last month’s, because the format changed, or the person who built the last one has since left the organization.

Multiply that across seasons, beaches, and staff turnover, and you get a familiar conservation story: an organization that is data-rich in theory but data-poor in practice. The information existed. It just wasn’t usable. It was slow to compile, easy to get wrong, and vulnerable to disappearing entirely whenever someone moved on.

That’s a hard way to protect an endangered species. You can’t make fast decisions with slow data, and you can’t build institutional knowledge on records that live in one person’s desk drawer.

Building a Tool Around the Work, Not the Other Way Around

We partnered with Tech to the Rescue to change that, not by handing the Society generic software, but by building a system shaped around how conservation teams actually operate in the field and back at base.

The result is a centralized, user-friendly platform for recording, updating, and analyzing turtle data. No more reconciling five spreadsheets. No more knowledge walking out the door with departing staff. Just one shared source of truth that the whole team can trust and use.

Why This Kind of Work Matters to Us

This project is a good distillation of what we believe at Revolution Analytics: that data, used well, is a form of care. Conservationists shouldn’t have to choose between protecting a species and drowning in paperwork. The right tool, built thoughtfully, lets them do both.
